Sending Money Home

Getting ZAR to South Africa from Vietnam, Thailand or Cambodia — honest comparison of your options and what actually works for expats.

South Africa's exchange controls mean you cannot freely move unlimited funds. Personal transfers are generally fine up to your allowance limits, but large transfers or business income may need SARB approval. When in doubt, consult a SARS-registered tax practitioner.

Transfer options compared

Method Speed Fees Rate quality Best for
Wise (TransferWise) 1–2 business days Low (0.4–1%) Mid-market rate Regular salary transfers, most amounts
OFX 1–3 business days Low (no transfer fees) Good rate Larger transfers — better rates above R50,000
Instarem 1–2 business days Low Good Vietnam, Thailand — good local bank coverage
Bank SWIFT transfer 3–5 business days High (R150–R400 per transfer) Poor (bank spread 3–6%) Only if required by recipient — avoid if possible
Western Union / MoneyGram Same day (cash) Very high Poor Emergencies only — very high cost
Crypto (USDT → ZAR) Minutes Variable Variable Experienced users only. SARS still requires declaration.

South African exchange control allowances

Single Discretionary Allowance (SDA)

Per calendar year. No tax clearance needed. Covers transfers, gifts, travel spend, and foreign investments combined.

R10,000,000
Foreign Investment Allowance (FIA)

Per calendar year. Requires tax clearance from SARS. For investments abroad — not typically relevant for expat salary transfers.

Unlimited
Emigration — formal financial emigration

If you've formally emigrated and have a non-resident tax status, different rules apply. Consult a SARB-approved forex dealer.

These figures are current as of 2026 but SARB allowances change. Always confirm current limits with your bank or forex dealer before large transfers.

Practical tips for Asia-based expats

Open a Wise multi-currency account

Hold USD, VND, THB and ZAR simultaneously. Pay locally in VND or THB. Transfer to SA in ZAR. Saves on conversion fees for daily spending.

Avoid airport and hotel exchanges

The ZAR/VND or ZAR/THB rates at airports are typically 10–15% worse than a proper forex service. Use an ATM or local bank instead.

Declare all offshore income to SARS

South Africa taxes residents on worldwide income. Even if you're taxed locally in Vietnam, you may still have a SARS reporting obligation. Get advice from a registered tax practitioner.

SA bank foreign currency accounts

Nedbank, FNB, and Standard Bank all offer foreign currency accounts for SA residents. These can be useful for holding USD before converting to ZAR at a good rate.

Use rate alerts

Wise, OFX, and Instarem all offer rate alert notifications. Set a target rate and transfer when the ZAR strengthens to your target level.

Keep transfer records

SARS may request proof of the source of funds for transfers into South Africa. Keep payslips, employment contracts, and transfer receipts for at least 5 years.
