Passport validity rule

Most countries require your South African passport to be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned departure date. Some require only 3 months — check the specific country entry below.

Visa on Arrival (VOA)

Countries offering VOA allow you to obtain your visa at the airport on arrival. You typically need a return ticket, proof of accommodation, and sufficient funds. Always carry USD cash as payment is often cash-only.

eVisa vs Visa on Arrival

An eVisa must be applied for online before travel — you receive an approval document to present at the border. A VOA is obtained at the border itself. Both typically result in the same tourist visa, but eVisas save queuing time.

Digital Arrival Cards

Many countries now require a digital arrival/departure card to be completed online before boarding. Failure to complete these can result in boarding denial. Complete them 24–72h before departure.

Transit visas

If your route passes through a third country (e.g. Doha, Nairobi, Frankfurt) for more than a few hours, check whether a transit visa is required. Schengen, UK, and US transit rules are particularly strict.

Important disclaimer

Visa rules change frequently. This guide is a general reference only and is updated periodically. Always verify requirements with the official embassy or consulate of the destination country before travel.
