eSIM for transit days
RecommendedIf your phone supports eSIM (most phones from 2020 onwards), activate a travel eSIM before you leave. Keep your local SIM active for receiving calls and use the eSIM for data through transit hubs and while in South Africa.
Marketplace for regional and country eSIMs. "Asia" regional eSIM covers Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong and more. From USD$6/7 days.
Clean app, good coverage. Popular with South African expats specifically. Regional Asia and Africa packs available.
Unlimited data plans. Good for longer trips in South Africa where you need data for WhatsApp, Google Maps, etc. Covered in ZA.
Vodacom, MTN, and Telkom all sell prepaid SIMs at OR Tambo, Cape Town International, and King Shaka. Useful if staying 2+ weeks.
WiFi at major transit hubs
Free unlimited WiFi. Login with phone number (any number). Fastest airport WiFi in Asia — consistently excellent.
Free WiFi available (UAE Pass or phone number login). Speed is decent but inconsistent. Emirates Lounge users get better connectivity.
Free WiFi throughout. Login with email. Reliable — Qatar invested heavily in terminal connectivity for the World Cup infrastructure.
Free Airport WiFi. Very fast. Also has free local SIM kiosks near arrivals — grab a 3-day local SIM for longer layovers.
Free WiFi. KLIA2 (budget terminal) also has free WiFi. Maxis and Celcom SIM counters at arrivals for longer layovers.
Free WiFi available but speed can be slow. Kenya is a great place to pick up an eSIM — Safaricom coverage is excellent countrywide.
Connectivity in South Africa
Vodacom and MTN counters are available at OR Tambo (JNB), Cape Town International (CPT), and King Shaka (DUR). RICA registration (show passport) takes 5 minutes. Data bundles: 10GB for around R150.
Holafly's South Africa eSIM provides good coverage via the Vodacom network. Activate before you land — useful for the first few hours while getting a local SIM.
During load shedding, cell towers run on battery backup which can degrade signal quality. Download offline maps before travelling to townships or rural areas.
Almost all SA communication (family, transport, accommodation) happens on WhatsApp. Ensure your SA WhatsApp number is active and receiving messages before you arrive.
